Cefalexin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, which means that it is active against a wide variety of germs (bacteria). It is
used to treat bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections, skin infections, chest and throat infections, ear infections and dental infections.
Cefalexin is the first generation of semi-synthetic cephalosporin.Its mechanism of action is by binding to one or more penicillin binding proteins (PBPs) of bacteria (cefalexin mainly binds to PBP-3), inhibiting the cell wall synthesis of bacterial dividing cells, thus acting as an antimicrobial agent.The antibacterial spectrum of cefalexin was similar to that of cefthiophene, but its antibacterial activity was worse than the latter.Gram-positive cocci were sensitive to cefalexin except enterococci and methicillin-resistant staphylococcus.Cefalexin has a good antibacterial effect on neisseria, but has a poor sensitivity to influenzae, some escherichia coli, proteus strangularis, klebsiella pneumoniae, salmonella, and other enterobacter bacteria, acinetobacter, pseudomonas aeruginosa and bacteroidetes fragilis are resistant to cefalexin.
